Here are the steps to quickly select a dog or any other subject in Photoshop to start working in layers. This is an important step to ensure you edit the background and not the model!
Step 1
When you have your photo opened in Photoshop, first click on the Quick Selection Tool in the menu on the left side.
Step 2
Go to the top menu bar and find "Select Subject." Before clicking on it, click the small downward arrow next to it and choose "Cloud detailed result." This will provide a more accurate selection compared to using the Device.
Step 3
Once you've selected this option, you can now click on "Select Subject."
Step 4
You will now see a selection around the subject, but it may not be perfect yet. To refine it, click on "Select and Mask" at the top.
Step 5
If you don't see the red overlay, which is the easiest to work with, you can change this by clicking on the downward arrow on the right side, as shown in the picture, and then selecting the red overlay.
Step 6
Select the "Refine Hair" button at the top to make your selection even more precise
Step 7
Now, go to the left side and choose the "Refine Edge Brush Tool." Make sure you have the "+" selected at the top. Use this to brush along the edges of the selected subject if you see any areas that are not properly selected
Step 8
Here, I am brushing over the ferns because Photoshop did not select them correctly. And once you have brushed over these areas, you can click "OK" on the right side
Step 9
And now the photo will open with a perfect selection so you can continue working in Photoshop.
Step 10
But now it’s important to invert the selection, otherwise, you’ll be working on the model itself, and you want to change the colors of the background. Click on “Select” at the top, and then choose “Inverse.” Now you’ll see that there’s a selection around the photo as well, so you’re ready to adjust the colors without altering the model.
